All you need to know is that if you had identical DNA (the exact phrase used in the movie) to someone else, you would be clones of each other. Consider the scene where David tells Shaw that she's pregnant, and tell me that's not a riff on the Annunciation. It seemed as if he knew or was carrying out some agenda the way he announced the pregnancy. [â]BarbotRobot 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (1 child). No excuse for dismissing a plot. Granted, it IS called Prometheus. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this. All DNA has the same double-helical structure. It doesn't surprise me that the co-writer worked on Lost. It could just be a roadmap of planets to purge. At the entrance to that room were multiple suits. weapons of mass destructions to safe-guard earth in the event the Engineers or whatever they find turn hostile. Is it possible that the Engineers at the installation were actually a different faction than the life bringers? [â]BarbotRobot 20 points21 points22 points 8 years ago (1 child). From my limited experience with British culture, it seems they refer to the Queen and similar boss-lady types as "mum", I guess out of respect? His mission 2000 years before the Prometheus event was eventually going to be to drop the urns on earth. TL;DR: mankind was created as an experiment, but humanity became prideful and undeserving of the life they had been granted. It is not clear whether this Engineer is responsible for starting all life on earth - but visually it seems to depict an âevolutionâ stemming from this persons DNA. [â]5k3k73k 20 points21 points22 points 8 years ago* (4 children). But Lindelof is not a strong writer. Another difference between the two ships is that the one on LV-426 was emitting a "distress beacon" which turned out to be a "stay away from here" beacon. The movie's guts are falling out all over the place and still it soldiers on. Right from the first scene, we learned their code of willing self-sacrifice in accord with a greater purpose. [â][deleted] 25 points26 points27 points 8 years ago (0 children). And I think that's my major gripe with the film. Unfortunately thatâs what the film implies - a barren alien looking earth, absent of any life - finally gets life introduced to it and these Engineers allegedly wait for us to evolve over unimaginable timescales only to finally decide to destroy us? There explanation for this is just stupid. Yeah, that's possible. [â]plias87[] 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children). Still, visually stunning. It really is because Fassbender clearly gives it his all and delivers an interesting performance despite being surrounded by brain dead caricatures. Vickers being there, as far as I can tell, was solely for the purpose of having someone to "protect" the ship, someone who was more or less detached from the personal relationships that the other characters had with one another, mainly shaw and the male scientist, and because her father was on the ship and she presumably knew, as she had access to the robot surgery thing that was supposed to be for her but was only programed for a male. But of course, we all love to bash Prometheus. Get an ad-free experience with special benefits, and directly support Reddit. The air is breathable, so take off your helmet? A thousand years before their disintegration actually started to happen. It's important symbolically to the themes of the film. Arguably, hard sci-fi. In Prometheus, according to the script, the reason why the Engineers are mad at humanity is because Jesus was one of the Engineers, and for him teaching humanity, we killed him. Life on Earth would not have come from DNA, and with their technology they wouldn't have to sacrifice themselves to start life, unless that was done for some religious/symbolic reason. In Alien the cycle was Egg > Facehugger > chest burster (from host) > full grown xenomorph. Honestly, the whole "android wants to be human" plot is a little hackneyed at this point. If this is accurate: They were scared to die. Well, numerous interviews with Scott have him confirming that he wants to do a sequel at the least. Lets assume that the black slime is still "sin". I thought Scott could have done a much better job with the Engineer, though. oh, face down. [â]OVERLY_CYNICAL 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (0 children). [â]emperor000 -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children). A 32,000 year old cave painting can't be a warning about something that happened approx. The infertility angle is very likely a play on virgin birth. [â]arjie 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children). Joins Daniel Craig in âKnives Out 2â. I'm just sick and tired of lazy Hollywood writing: going straight to the supernatural to drive and explain plot. Which is complete BS, we are incredibly imaginative people. (I'm not even going to begin to explore the pro-choice versus forced birth implications of that scene. Nothing changes for the lifeforms involved except exposure to the black goop. Your opinions are wrong. So how do the worms fit in with this? But as a cohesive narrative, it failed. [â]lenny20 584 points585 points586 points 8 years ago* (266 children). The black goo inside is a weaponized version of the seeder goo. But really, did it have to be written so that the guy who gets lost is the same guy responsible for mapping the caverns? Because when Shaw brought the Engineer's head back to life it was infected, that's why it exploded. Did anyone else find this symbolic that a real severed engineer head was in a room with a statue of a head? Nobody does. That part confused me! Indeed. We don't see any eggs because the dome we saw in this film did not store that particular recipe. The installation on LV-223 was not built for military purposes, at least not exclusively. They had stockpiled all the black goo weapon, but there was an accident and the weapon wiped them out before they could send the payload. Perhaps, A TEAM. They used the planet they had directed us to; I think this was because that base was the one assigned to monitor Earth and humankind. I really didn't look at it through the whole black goo/psychic intent from human angle. 3) We don't know what the biological and physical capacities of the Engineers are. the man who ingested goop impregnated his girlfriend with an aggressive proto-facehugger. [â]Qubeye 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (0 children), I think it makes mild sense that it's specific like that. Or just sloppy writing. We never see the threat that the Engineers were fleeing from, we never see them killed other than accidentally (decapitation by door), and we see no remaining trace of whatever killed them. âAlien â Covenantâ takes the story forward as we begin the journey to understand the myth behind âAlienâ. [â]THE1andonlyAUZ 31 points32 points33 points 8 years ago (0 children). I can't say I wouldn't have made a different choice. [â][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (0 children). A thousand years before their disintegration actually started to happen. It's not a stretch to find those themes and its not a product of "inspect closely enough" or "drawing a long bow," its a product of understanding the myth that the movie is named for and being a fan of the director and following his remarks about his own movie. More importantly does it really fucking matter? Head to earth and save themselves. If either is true (David brought them or they were already there) it's still an exercise in shitty writing as we are never told if he brought them or, more importantly, if they were already there, why didn't they set off the aliens evolutionary cycle or at least evolve because of the black goo and turn into something nasty. I managed to backburner most of the plotholes you brought up in an effort to enjoy the film, but Shaw-after-surgery was the killer for me. I think it reminds the Engineer of why the humans were going to be eliminated. The only reason the capt. isn't he all alone? When David disassembles one earlier in the film, you can almost imagine those four glass-like vials separating from the "bomb" and striking different targets. The only reason I put so much thought into it is because I'm a huge fan of the alien mythos. [â]dasstrooper 29 points30 points31 points 8 years ago (3 children), "100 credits says this is a terraforming survey", [â]RIP_Greedo 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (2 children). Which I'm actually ok with. Take Holloway, Shaw's lover, who impregnates her barren womb with his black slime riddled semen before realising he is being transformed into something Other. Lust/Sex. The engineers could also have ran outside the dome to escape the new atmosphere, and presumably some of them did, and those may not have been able to return to the dome. Nice, although I'm still pretty sure it's just a crossover of ancient aliens and tentacle porn. Lazy writing by people who use the stories they knew since they were about 12 (like the quote from Scott). It has no self-awareness and no consciousness. and it transformed into a tentacle pretty quick and killed the two humans. The crashed ship in Prometheus carried jars and had nobody left in the control room, the jockey died outside the ship in a human structure. [â]LaserBison 21 points22 points23 points 8 years ago (17 children). In the opening scene of Prometheus there is a new kind of alien ship that is clearly not of engineer design. The lifeform that is created by the slime's reaction with Holloway's DNA is one that is near the pinnacle of life's many forms -- in Ash's words, "The perfect organism." John Krasinski and the Tense Wait for âA Quiet Place Part IIâ - Itâs been more than a year since the film he wrote and directed was originally set for release. [â]myusernamestaken 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children). In the pilot's room it looks like several worlds were shown, it seems like the seeding of life was coordinated and sanctioned. As a film, The Game is fascinating for its redemptive, even romantic message: we can all love and be loved (a common ending in cinema). The Engineer seems impressed or maybe awestruck that a human has learned their language. I really like the other interpretation as well though. (We're not done yet.). You're being downvoted for being snarky, but I agree with you. Question: Why did Vickers have a male-only medical pod in her room? But some humans do act in ways the Engineers might have grudgingly admired. On the face of it, it seems absurd to suggest that the genesis of the Alien xenomorph ultimately lies in the grotesque human act of crucifying the Space Jockeys' emissary to Israel in four B.C., but that's what Ridley Scott proposes. There's nothing wrong with that. After his helmet melted he fell face flat into the puddle of black goo. [â]aManPerson 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (9 children). weyland wasn't going to be in stasis forever, when he first got out, he claimed he only had a few days left in him. [â]Duskendymion 195 points196 points197 points 8 years ago (45 children), So...once we killed Jesus (a benevolent alien ambassador) we pissed them off they decided to destroy us. There is a pod thing in the air, a big one. ... A movie shouldn't have to be explained to such a degree ... amazing visuals. thank you for perfectly describing my biggest problem with this movie. [â]aManPerson 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children). Through Shaw and Holloway's investigations, we learn that the Engineers not only created human life, they supervised our development. He seems like his arc is going to be a quest for his own humanity. Conversely, there are a far greater number of moments which completely collapse on further analysis. By going to this planet on your own flawed curiosity you've kicked off something you can't control. Everything else in the movie--ok not really everything else--but many things in the movie can just be chalked up to classic Sci-Fi. They build an outpost stocked with the stuff on an isolated moon. You'd also be made aware of this fact if you have seen Alien. If shit goes to hell, their job is to make sure nothing fucked up makes it back to earth. I think we should take the story of Prometheus more literally. ", [â][deleted] 33 points34 points35 points 8 years ago (27 children). This makes the Engineer go from being happy to killdozer mode. It's always been my understanding that the Xenomorph "remix" the DNA of their host animal to some degree, possibly to gain the evolutionary attributes that made the host organism successful. But his artwork is very well remembered for its blending of sex and horror. (How else are we to explain the numerous images of Engineers in primitive art, complete with star diagram showing us the way to find them?) the mealworm that got gooped turned into an aggressive space penis with acidic blood. That illustrates the rapid growth cycle that the sperm-like creature, the other creatures in Prometheus, and the Xenomorph of Alien share. The geologist mapped the cave himself, and had the schematic on his wrist computer. Prometheus Unbound: What The Movie Was Actually About. This was a great read. Good. Remember Shaw thinks they want them to come find them. (His liver magically grew back, in case you were wondering.). It was the captain's call. ⢠What was Vickers' agenda? It started bubbling. No idea. [â][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (1 child). That's just lazy writing to add cheap extra drama to the scene. IMHO, [â][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children). While they are clearly related to humans and clearly very advanced, the goop does not appear to be some kind of benign "seed of life". This is why the last surviving engineer so violently reacted upon being woken by a vain old man clinging to his fortune and to his life. So I present this as a thesis: many of the engineers were caught by surprise by the oxygen atmosphere created in the facility. Shorter TL;DR: you can infer virtually anything if you inspect a piece of work closely enough - even Vanilla Ice predicting the collapse of the World Trade Centre. This is a movie that had a lot of potential to use the various cited mythos as part of its confict, but it really didn't use that material much at all. The problem is Damon Lindelof. She could of just had a really hard time getting pregnant. The worms did not reproduce, they only killed. This is why the Engineers keep a close watch on their projects, and destroy them when they begin to show violent and predatory tendencies. It is the fact that the first Engineer, seen in the opening scenes, was rogue. Touch, touch, touch, oh look black goo! Unfortunately for them, their baby got the best of them. In fact, the entire crew are initially quite concerned about the concept of removing their helmets, for the very reason of infection risk. I'm glad I found this post, because I had a question about it, but I don't know any doctors or med students. [â]RasputinPlaysTheTuba 11 points12 points13 points 8 years ago (2 children). At this point they receive a transmission; there's been a reading, a life-form. Why were they affected by the slime? BECAUSE THE WORMS IN THE CHAMBER TOUCHED THE BLACK GOO. Like I said, "a mythology", loosely, is any (usually consistent, while often fantastical, which I left out before) universe that is created through storytelling, similar to the collection of myths of various cultures around the world. He first looks and smiles at David, seems to caress him, and then destroys him. Not unlike the feeling of having a spider suddenly land on you. That is, he sees that humanity has fallen from grace, but there are those on Earth worth saving. I see this flaw too. Nothing. p.s. We actually leave stone warning signs at nuclear storage sites to try and warn visitors 20.000 years from now that it would be a bad place to settle. This is why the series frequently depicts the Alien creatures attaching themselves to the hosts mouth or invading it. But are you really asking why an alien species, even with our DNA, who live on other words look different than us? Was the one in the pod sleeping in his suit, or was that his body? To eliminate us, they created a biological weapon using the DNA-destroying black slime that they used for gardening. That suggests that the event that turned them against us and led to the huge piles of dead Engineers lying about was one and the same event. Either on the order of billions, millions or thousands of years. None of them were able to escape the slime. The Space Jockeys would have never let man get past a certain intelligence but thats when the Jockey home world and lv223 got overran and lost control. It had nothing to feed on yet grew 1000 times larger. I think that the race of engineers, a more advanced society, our creator, was just really pissed at what they saw. There are only certain people who are willing to spend a couple weeks/months/years asleep in stasis in return for cash. Those concepts are established as being true in the Prometheus universe and I can get behind them. Maybe if cash was up front and I had a family it would take care of, but even then I hope my kids would rather have a father over a million dollars. [â]occluded 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (1 child). Prometheus did have some dumb scenes in it (crushed by the ship, the mapper getting lost) but it doesn't deserve the criticism it's getting. After humans killed Jesus, the perfect example of humanity, of what we can aspire to, I think it matters not whether he was an engineer, they were just disgusted by what they saw. He was thinking about analogies, he isn't explicitly suggesting that this is the case in the Aliens/Prometheus "universe". They crucified him. [â]mencken 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children). It doesn't have any effect on the film whatsoever - i was simply replying to an 'inconsistency' i saw in the first point. Like her father, she wants to keep herself alive, and so she ejects and lands on the planet's surface. 2) The ship(s) the crew finds are military in nature. [â]SlipperyRoo 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children). I think the opinion expressed in the analysis that OP posted is a reasonable one, although it requires us to accept the idea that the goo's behavior is affected by emotions (like the stuff in Ghostbusters 2). There is a lot of subtext to this film, and while some people are disappointed by the fact it doesn't spell things out for them and they didn't get an Alien movie; this movie is going to be shown to have legs in coming decades. It also may be that we simply can't recognize distinguishing features like we can in human faces, much like we can't in many other species, even other mammals even other primates. Indeed. [â]Darthfuzzy 197 points198 points199 points 8 years ago* (142 children). He might even have saved himself if he acted quickly (from his perspective). Re: the helmets off - It's 2090, there is absurd technology that we can't even dream of being used all over the place. So what we have here is a facility manned by engineers, working with a material that is known to create hostile monsters and aggressive behavior and loading it onto ships. LOL Y U SO CRABBY BRO? Prometheus exhibits a lot of vague writing, and I'm not happy >:(, I'd like to add my 2 cents into this conversation and just talk about sci-fi writing in general. So when, 2000 year previous to the setting of the movie, the other Engineers discovered humanity, they set about arranging an etch-a-sketch ending to the world. [â]ours 25 points26 points27 points 8 years ago (3 children). Four, I make it. Holloway did it in his excitement, which I can kind of understand. I got the feeling that way of doing things was just business as usual in the late 21st century. Why did the engineers not come dick us over anyway if they were so pissed at us after this installation fell? Rather, it was a base from which to launch their missions, both for creating and destroying life. All of these plot holes and logical inconsistencies can be explained away - there's possible reasons for each of them to exist. TL;DR: A lot of these problems have plausible explanations in my opinion. Maybe what he saw helped him pick the correct canister after admiring the xenomorph in the mural. Not evolution because that would suggest change through biased selection. That's the whole point of a horror movie is to typically play on those two things. Source? No. It's not too difficult to believe that something went wrong with it years before that. I tried to offer explanations, as I came to understand them, for some of your main points. Just like everyone in the theatre was laughing their asses off at the great big fuck-off staple gun surgery. But she does cry which implies to me she was still alive.
